Barberry extract comes from the root of Berberis. Barberry is a tall shrub with gray, thorny branches. Bright yellow flowers bloom in the late spring become dark, drooping bunches of red berries in the fall.

Both the berries and the bark are used in healing. Medicinal use of barberry dates back at least to the time of ancient Egypt, when it was combined with fennel seed to prevent plague. In Europe and the US, Barberry has been used as a bitter tonic, antipyretic, and antihemorrhagic. Barberry is widely used for medicinal purposes and help improve the immune system.

Berberine hydrochloride is widely used as an antibacterial, antifungal, and anti-inflammatory drug, and has been used as a gastrointestinal remedy for thousands of years in China. Berberine has antibacterial effect on hemolytic streptococcus, Staphylococcus aureus, Neisseria gonorrhoeae and shigella dysentery, and can enhance leukocyte phagocytosis. Berberine hydrochloride (commonly known as berberine hydrochloride) has been widely used in the treatment of gastroenteritis, bacterial dysentery, tuberculosis, scarlet fever, acute tonsillitis and respiratory tract infection has a certain effect. 

It has antibacterial effect on gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria in vitro, including hemolytic streptococcus, Staphylococcus aureus and Vibrio cholerae. Meningococcus, shigella dysentery bacillus, typhoid bacillus, diphtheria bacillus and other strong inhibition, low concentration of bacteriostasis, high concentration of bactericidal. It also has certain inhibitory effect on influenza virus, amoeba, leptospirosis and some skin fungi. In vitro experiments confirmed that berberine can enhance the phagocytosis of leukocytes and hepatic reticuloendothelial system.Dysentery bacillus, hemolytic streptococcus, Staphylococcus aureus and other easy to produce drug resistance to this product. There is no cross-resistance with penicillin and streptomycin.
