Isatis root is the dried root of the cruciferous Isatis plant, which is also a traditional Chinese medicinal material. Isatis root is most commonly known as 'dyer's woad' because the leaves can be used to make blue dye.
Isatis root contains Indoxyl-β-glucoside, Isatin, Indigo, Isatan B, Uridine, Uracil, Hypoxanthine, Salicylic acid, Qingdainone, Daucosterol, β-Sitosterol, Banlangen B, C and D. It also contains vegetable protein, resinous substances, sugars, glucosinolates, various amino acids and trace elements. Also contains bacteriostatic substances against Gram-positive and negative bacteria.
