Introduction of Mangosteen Extract
The fruit is reddish or dark purple in color. Due to its good taste mangosteen is also known as queen of fruits. The place of origin is not known but it mangosteen is said to have been first domesticated in Southeast Asian countries. Thailand, Burma, India and Vietnam are some of the countries where it was cultivated since many years. Apart from these countries it is now grown in other Asian countries and some African countries.
Mangosteen does not have many varieties except for the one which is found in Sulu Islands. It is an
ultra-tropical plant which needs humidity, rainfall and cannot survive in long periods of drought. And it cannot be grown at very high altitude regions. Harvesting seasons vary on the basis of location and altitude. In India there are two seasons for harvest, monsoon period and between April and June. In Ceylon, the fruit season is from May to Jul for low altitude regions and for higher altitude regions the fruit ripens from July to August or August to September.
It seems that the people of Southeast Asia realized the medicinal value that this fruit had long time ago. Relying on it as a form of treatment to different medical conditions is the reason why scientists have continuously carried out studies and researches to confirm these healing allegations. So far the benefits of this fruit have been proved scientifically over the past 3 decades to be true.
Health benefits of mangosteen include reduced risk of cancer, inflammation, allergies and diabetes. It has antioxidant, antifungal, antibacterial properties which help in protecting the body against various health ailments and also boosts immune system. Mangosteen is beneficial in maintaining healthy skin, weight management and providing relief from diarrhea and dysentery.
Introduction of Xanthones
Xanthones were first discovered and isolated in 1855 by a German scientists performing research on dysentery. Xanthones were named after the Greek word for yellow, xanthos. Xanthones are actually a yellow pigment with the highest concentrations occurring in the mangosteen fruit. Research performed by Brunswick Laboratories in Massachusetts revealed that consumption of xanthone rich substances, such as mangosteen juice, can offer beneficial antioxidant properties.
There are over 200 xanthones that can be acquired from nature, but mangosteen contains the highest number of this chemical compound. Xanthones can also be derived from other fruits but in minimal amount only compared to mangosteen. In fact, mangosteen is considered to be the richest source of xanthone with over 40 kinds of xanthone content.
Xanthone is actually plant derived nutrient that can be acquired from nature and organic materials in small quantities. It is a potent life enhancing nutrient that works better than any other kind of vitamins and minerals. In fact, it has antioxidant and pharmaceutical properties that work far better than Vitamin E and C. It contains a number of powerful antioxidants that effectively fight against free radicals. As commonly known, free radicals are responsible for the damaged skin cells that lead to a number of serious illnesses such as cancer. Xanthone works by repairing the damage cells thereby reducing the risk of developing cancer and other serious medical conditions. In fact, xanthones are considered to be the super antioxidant because it can combat different kinds of serious illness that are triggered by constant damage in the skin cells.
Research about the effectiveness of xanthones and mangosteen in dealing with various kinds of serious illnesses began in 1970 and between 1996-2005, there has been a significant increase in the number of clinical researches that were conducted. These scientific studies further proved the effectiveness and efficiency of xanthones and mangosteen in treating different medical conditions. Results revealed that xanthones travel through the body and removes all free radical and harmful substances along its way. In effect, the body is left cleaner and healthier.
There are lots of medicinal products and health supplements today that incorporate mangosteen and xanthones in their list of ingredients but consumers must be aware of the components of mangosteen that were used. The full healing and nutritional value of mangosteen can only be derived when the entire seed, fruit pulp and pericarp are utilized. Ever since then, pericarp was already used to treat the inflammation of throat and nose, inflammation of the urinary bladder, skin ailments, eczema, fever, intestinal conditions, diarrhea and dysentery. Many pharmaceutical companies make use of xanthones in their health supplements because of its antithrombotic, platelet aggregation inhibitory and vasorelaxant properties.
According to some clinical studies that were conducted, xanthones have the ultimate capacity of regulating the cholesterol level of an individual. It even regulates the blood sugar levelof human and fight against different kinds of infections that are caused by virus, fungi, bacteria and fungi.
This phytonutrient can also improve the skin condition of human beings while at the same time help fight against inflammation and pain. It also promotes microbiological balance, supports the immune system and prevents allergic reactions. Results of clinical studies also reveal that xanthone enhances the cardiovascular system of human beings. In fact, xanthone is proven and tested to be effective in combating cancer and atherosclerosis or hardening of the arteries. This powerful chemical compound can also prevent the risk of developing stroke, thrombosis, hypertension, ischemic heart disease, and heart attack.
Benefit of Mangosteen Extract
1> Preventing Cancer
Research has shown that consumption of xanthones can offer protection against various forms of cancer. A study performed at the Gifu International Institute of Biotechnology in Japan revealed that the xanthones contained within the mangosteen fruit inhibited growth and proliferation against human leukemia cells. Additional investigation by researchers at Khon Kaen University in Thailand revealed that xanthones offered significant inhibition of growth and proliferation of malignant cells associated with cholangiocarcinoma. Cholangiocarcinoma is a malignant tumor in one of the ducts that carries bile from the liver to the small intestine.
Research also suggests that consumption of xanthone rich products may offer protection for the heart muscle. A study performed by the Department of Pharmacology at Central South University in China reveals that treatment with xanthones offered prevention against the damage that could be obtained from a myocardial infarction or heart attack. When compared to an untreated group of subjects, the subjects treated with xanthones exhibited significantly improved cardiac function and markedly decreased amount of cardiac damage post myocardial infarction.
3> Reducing Inflammation
Consumption of xanthone rich products can also reduce inflammation, particularly in obese individuals. A study performed at the Department of Nutrition at Mahidol University in Thailand revealed that the consumption of xanthones successfully inhibited inflammation. Another study published in the "Indian Journal of Pharmacology" revealed that xanthones exhibited anti-inflammatory properties by both oral and intravenous administration in laboratory animals.
