Introduction:
Passionflower has neurosedative properties, including mild sedative and anti-anxiety properties. In trials conducted in the 1930s, its mode of action was found to be different from that of most sedatives (hypnotics), making it a class of non-additive herbal medicines that promote relaxation. Passionflower's sedative properties have made it popular for treating a variety of ailments, including nervousness and insomnia. Studies point to the complex effects of passionflower on the central nervous system (CNS), which may be responsible for its general neuroleptic effects.
Benefits:
1. Anti-anxiety and treatment of insomnia
2. Passiflora also has an antispasmodic effect on smooth muscles in the body, including the digestive system. In animal experiments, researchers found that the plant slows the passage of food through the digestive tract, thereby facilitating digestion.
