Corn Silk is a traditional Chinese medicine in China. Corn silk whole grass contains a large amount of no-radrenaline and potassium salts (potassium chloride, potassium nitrate, potassium sulfate, etc., calculated by K2O, fresh grass contains 1% potassium salts, hay contains 17% potassium salts). It also contains dihydroxyphenylethylamine (Dopamine) and dihydroxyphenylalanine (DOPA) to spit. Malic acid, citric acid, glutamic acid, aspartic acid, alanic acid and sucrose, glucose, fructose and so on. Also contains protein, fat, sugar, crude fiber, calcium, phosphorus, iron, vitamin A, B, C and so on. The whole plant contains alkaloids, coumarin, flavonoids, cardiac glycosides and anthraquinone glycosides.

Corn silk has the effect of lowering blood lipids in patients with hyperlipidemia, so as to protect the heart and brain and reduce the incidence of ischemic cardiovascular diseases (including coronary heart disease and ischemic stroke). The flavone extract of corn silk had obvious regulation effect on lipid metabolism in mice, and showed obvious dose-effect relationship. 

Pharmacological studies have proved that corn silk have diuretic, antihypertensive, promote bile secretion, increase in learning thrombin and accelerate the role of blood coagulation. Corn silk have the effect of preventing and controlling hypertension. Some scholars have found that calcium contained in corn can reduce blood pressure. β -sitosterol can inhibit tumor growth and reduce the release level of prostate-specific antigen PSA. Corn silk are also high in magnesium. Magnesium can cause cancer development, help vasodilation, strengthen intestinal wall peristalsis, increase bile, promote the body to expel waste. Magnesium also protects against ischemic heart disease and maintains normal cardiac function.
