Solubility: well soluble in water, no foreign matters, but slightly faint turbidity is allowed.

Chemical Composition of Chaga:
Chaga contains a wide range of biologically active substances. It has water soluble pigments in large amount (20%) which form a chromogenic polyphenolcarboxylic complex; pterins (pteridine derivatives) responsible for cytostatic effect of the fungus; polysaccharides (6-8%); agaricinic and humic chaga acids (up 60%); organic acids (oxalic acid, acetic acid, vanillic, lilac); lipids (di- and triglycerides); steroid substances (sterols - ergosterol and tetracyclic triterpenes - lanosterol and inotodiol exhibiting antiblastic activity); lignin; fiber; flavonoids; coumarin peutsedanin; cellulose; resins; traces of alkaloids of unknown structure; as well as other trace elements in the form of oxides such as copper, barium, zinc, iron, silicon, aluminum, calcium, magnesium, potassium, sodium, and potassium content is 5-6 times higher than that of sodium.

No country in the world has such an abundance of birch trees. And chaga fungus that grows on birch trunks appears to be one of the most enigmatic healing miracles of Russian nature. Due to unique properties of the fungus it is known all over the world and is much sought after by Western, Japanese, Korean businessmen and individuals.
Chaga mushroom has a very distinctive features and looks like a black cracked mass in appearance. Unlike any other tree fungus chaga is not actually sitting on the trunk but is growing from inside of a tree outwards. It is very easy to distinct chaga from any other tree fungus.
In Russia chaga is known also under the names "Black birch mushroom" or "Birch lip". Its present name "Chaga" had probably originated from the Old Slavonic word "Gaga" which means "a lip". Siberians call chaga a "shulta". In Russia the birch tree is believed to be the most curative tree of all other trees and is even considered as a symbol of Russia. In local folk medicine as well as in official medicine every part of a birch tree (juice, leaves, buds, wood, bark, chaga) is being used in applications against various diseases including diabetes and cancer. Chaga and birch tree are strongly interlinked. Therefore, the birch tree and its age plays a key role when one speaks of chaga healing properties. Chaga draws its nutrients out of a living birch tree rather than from the ground, thus the older is the tree the more nutrients chaga aquires from it and the more biologically active substances accumulate themselves in chaga as time goes by. The best hosts for chaga are Betula pendula and Betula pubescens. Sometimes chaga is capable to kill the tree on which it had grown. Mostly it happens to very old trees that become exhausted by chaga, especially if there were several chaga mushrooms living on one trunk. The picture below illustrates exactly this case.
