Product Description

The functional components of blueberry extract appear to be the phenolic compounds, particularly the anthocyanins and pterostilbene. Blueberry extract is now used as an alternative to the expensive Vaccinium myrtillus extracts, a type of European wild blueberry which is widely used in prescription and over-the-counter medications.
There are currently over 180 Vaccinium pharmaceutical products available worldwide. This type of medication has become increasingly popular; However, the European crops cannot meet the global demand (Chein and Camire, 1996). France, Italy, Germany, and Korea have been particularly active in the development of bilberry products.

The anthocyanins of bilberries and North American wild blueberries are generally similar (Kult and Dufour, 1997). Pharmaceutical manufacturers are now considering lowbush blueberry extracts as an alternative to the expensive V. myrtillus extracts (Chein and Camire 1996).

Blueberries are powerful antioxidants. Antioxidants help neutralize harmful by-products of metabolism called "free radicals" that can lead to cancer and other age-related diseases. Anthocyanin, which is the pigment that makes the blueberry blue, is the key antioxidant responsible for these benefits.
Developments have placed Blueberry at the top of the health list to soak up free radicals and combat carcinogens. The anthocyanins in Blueberry are beneficial for helping to combat age-related memory loss and Alzheimer's disease. This nutrient and vitamin rich berry also support healthy blood sugar levels and healthy cardiac function.

Functions:
  1. Protect eyesight and prevent blindness, glaucoma, improve myopia.
  2. Preventing atherosclerosis, Preventing brain from aging.
  3. Enhancing immune function.
  4. Scavenge free radical activity.
  5. Preventing atherosclerosis.
  6. Soften blood vessels, blood circulation
  7. Enhancing immune function.
  8. Preventing brain from aging, anti-cancer and anti-oxydant, especially the colon cancer,
  9. Reducing age-related memory loss
  10. Supporting sugar levels and healthy cardiac function

Blueberries also have great value in the food industry, they not only contribute flavor and color, but they also enhance the nutritional profile of foods and can act as a partial or complete fat replacer. Reduced fat products benefit from the improved mouth-feel and texture that blueberries impart (NABC 1998).
