Fucoxanthin is a natural carotenoid available in different types of edible algae, such as Laminaria Japonica and Undaria Pinnatifida. It is brown, as it known to give algae its characteristic coloring.
Functions
Weight Loss
Fucoxanthin is being explored for weight loss. So far, only animal studies have been done. Japanese researchers have found that fucoxanthin promotes the loss of abdominal fat in obese mice and rats. Animals lost five to ten percent of their body weight.
Although it's not fully understood how fucoxanthin works, it appears to target a protein called UCP1 that increases the rate at which abdominal fat is burned. Abdominal fat, also called white adipose tissue, is the kind of fat that surrounds our organs and is linked to heart disease and diabetes.
Improve Liver Condition
As further researches, scientists and nutritionists have discovered that fucoxanthin has a certain influence on the liver. The liver is one of the top hormone producers in the body and brings DHA. With the help of increased Fucoxanthin, the liver produces more DHA, which, in turn helps to decrease cholesterol level.
Side Effects
Fucoxanthin is a carotenoid found in edible brown seaweeds. Research undertaken on fucoxanthin about antiobesity effect, has shown it to be safe for body. However, the slimming products in present market that contain fucoxanthin, also contain other matters, so it may occur side effects to some people who has certain or special bodily condition.
