Functions: 
Passionflower or Passion Flower (Passiflora incarnata) is a plant native to North America, found mostly in the Midwest and Southeast. Passionflower has been used as folk remedy to treat anxiety.
Recently rodent studies have found that extracts of passion flower had aphrodisiac properties. Passion flower is helpful in some people in reducing restlessness, anxiety, and nervousness. It also has mild anti-cough properties. Passion flower extract has an effective adjuvant agent in the management of opiate withdrawal. Passion flower is helpful as a sleep aid for occasional sleeplessness nights. It is also used for antispasmodic.

Treating anxiety
Herbalists have a high regard for the soothing properties of passionflower and recommend it as a general nerve tonic to treat nervous stress. The Commission E approved its use for anxiety. Passionflower is used to gently relax the mind or body to prepare for a more restful nights sleep. Other uses include neuralgia including post herpes nerve pain and shingles. Together in an extract, the alkaloids and flavonoids of passionflower are stronger sedatives and relaxants that one isolated chemical, reminding us of the wisdom of using the whole herb, instead of isolated extracts. Passionflower is often used in conjunction with other mildly sedative herbs like lemon balm and valerian

Easing Opiate Withdrawal
Another study published in the same issue of "Journal of Clinical Pharmacy and Therapeutics" found that passion flower was helpful in treating opiate withdrawal. Opiate addicts treated with passion flower extract plus the medication clonidine were compared with those treated with clonidine plus placebo over 14 days. Both therapies were equally effective in reducing physical withdrawal symptoms, but the group receiving clonidine plus passion flower had significantly better control over mental symptoms such as anxiety.
