Product description:
Valerian is an herb. Medicine is made from the root. Valerian is most commonly used for sleep disorders, especially the inability to sleep (insomnia). It is frequently combined with hops, lemon balm, or other herbs that also cause drowsiness. Some people who are trying to withdraw from the use of "sleeping pills" use valerian to help them sleep after they have tapered the dose of the sleeping pill. There is some scientific evidence that valerian works for sleep disorders, although not all studies are positive. Valerian is also used for conditions connected to anxiety and psychological stress including nervous asthma, hysterical states, excitability, fear of illness (hypochondria), headaches, migraine, and stomach upset.
Indications:
Valerian is an herb that has been used since ancient times to treat insomnia, anxiety and nervousness, as well as related stomach ailments. The root is typically used for medicinal purposes, often made into dried powder to make teas and extracts, tinctures and fluid extracts.
Insomnia
Valerian is a safe and gentle alternative to prescription sleep medications, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC). Studies have found that valerian is effective at helping people fall asleep faster and experience higher-quality sleep, while inducing fewer side effects than other drugs. Some studies have indicated that valerian was just as effective in treating insomnia as prescription sleep aids, but the herb didn't impact patients' ability to recall their dreams or to wake up in the morning without drowsiness, says HerbNet. Some medical studies indicated that individuals may not experience valerian's effects in treating chronic sleep disorders until after they've taken the herb extract for several weeks or months.
Anxiety
Valerian also help to ease anxiety. A study of hyperactive, anxious and learning-disabled children in Germany found that after taking valerian for several weeks, the children experienced improvements in aggressiveness, restlessness, anxiety and fear, HerbNet. Doctors in Germany have been treating hyperactive and anxious children with valerian since the 1970s. Although medical scientists aren't entirely certain how valerian works in the brain, they believe that the herb increases the chemical gamma-aminobutyric acid in the brain, which helps to regulate nerve cells and has a calming effect on anxiety, explains the UMMC.
Nervousness
Valerian has been used since the second century A.D. to treat nervousness and related stomach cramps, states the UMMC. Valerian acts as a very mild tranquilizer to relieve nervous tension and restlessness by sedating the central nervous system due to the valerian extract and other components found in the essential oil, explains HerbNet. Because valerian can decrease muscle spasms, the herb is helpful in treating digestion problems relating to nervousness and stress. Although valerian is often recommended as a treatment for nervous stomach conditions.
