Plant Description:
Morus nigra, called black mulberry or blackberry, is a species of flowering plant in the family Moraceae, native to southwestern Asia, where it has been cultivated for so long that its precise natural range is unknown. It is known for its large number of chromosomes, as it has 154 pairs (308 individuals).  Morus nigra is a deciduous tree growing to 12 m (39 ft) tall by 15 m (49 ft) broad. The leaves are 10-20 cm (4-8 in) long by 6-10 cm (2-4 in) broad - up to 23 cm (9 in) long on vigorous shoots, downy on the underside, the upper surface rough with very short, stiff hairs.The edible fruit is dark purple, almost black, when ripe, 2-3 centimetres (0.8-1.2 in) long, a compound cluster of several small drupes; it is richly flavoured, and abundant glucose, cane sugar, Vitamin A, B, C, anthocyanidins and many mineral sbustances, similar to the red mulberry (Morus rubra). The ripe fruit is edible and is widely used in pies, tarts, wines, cordials and tea. The fruit of the black mulberry, native to southwest Asia, and the red mulberry, native to eastern North America, have the strongest flavor, which has been likened to 'fireworks in the mouth'.
In China, thousand years ago, mulberry fruit had already been considered asroyal food and among the folk, it was called the "Holy Fruit". It has reported to have very good healthy function for human's heart, liver and kidney.  
Traditional Chinese Medicine said, the best food to eat during "Grain in Ear" period, is Mulberry fruit. Nutritional profile in a 100gram serving, raw mulberries provide 43 calories, 44% of the Daily Value (DV) for Vitamin C and 14% of the DV for iron (table).  
Traditional Use as Colorant food additive Mulberry fruit color derives from anthocyanins which are under basic research for mechanisms of various diseases. Anthocyanins are responsible for the attractive colors of fresh plant foods, including orange, red, purple, black, and blue. These colors are water-soluble and easily extractable, yielding natural food colorants. Due to a growing demand for natural food colorants, their significance in the food industry is increasing.A cheap and industrially feasible method has been developed to extract anthocyanins from mulberry fruit which could be used as a fabric tanning agent or food colorant of high color value (above 200). Scientists found that, of thirty-one Chinese mulberry cultivars tested, the total anthocyanin yield varied from 148 mg to 2725 mg per liter of fruit juice. It was also found that all the sugars, acids, and vitamins of the fruit remained intact in the residual juice after removal of the anthocyanins, so the juice could be used to produce products such as juice, wine, and sauce. Scientific Research in health industry as Antioxidant The antioxidant potential of extracts obtained from mulberry fruits was investigated by several authors. Among the 28 fruits commonly consumed in China, mulberry pulp was characterised by one of the highest values of the ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) at 4.11 mmol/100 g wet weight.
