Cancer Fighting Ingredient
The active cancer-fighting ingredient in amygdalin is cyanide. Advocates of amygdalin theorize that two of its other components, prunasin and benzaldehyde, also may block cancer cells. However, although some laboratory studies do suggest amygdalin has anticancer properties, clinical trials and other scientific studies reveal that it is ineffective in humans, according to the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York. If you take amygdalin you may suffer cyanide toxicity, which can be fatal, according to the New England Journal of Medicine.
Amygdalin gained popularity in the 1970s as a single anticancer agent and as part of a metabolic therapy program that included a special diet, high-dose vitamin supplements, and pancreatic enzymes (a group of proteins that aid in the digestion of food). By 1978, more than 70,000 people in the United States had reportedly been treated with Amygdalin.
