Valerian is an herb that has been used since ancient times to treat insomnia, anxiety and nervousness, as well as related stomach ailments. The root is
typically used for medicinal purposes, often made into dried powder to make
teas and extracts, tinctures and fluid extracts.
Insomnia
Valerian is a safe and gentle alternative to prescription sleep medications,
according to the University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC). Studies have
found that valerian is effective at helping people fall asleep faster and
experience higher-quality sleep, while inducing fewer side effects than other drugs. Some
studies have indicated that valerian was just as effective in treating insomnia
as prescription sleep aids, but the herb didn't impact patients' ability to recall

Valerian has been used since the second century A.D. to treat nervousness
and related stomach cramps, states the UMMC. Valerian acts as a very mild
tranquilizer to relieve nervous tension and restlessness by sedating the
central nervous system due to the valerian extract and other components
found in the essential oil, explains HerbNet. Because valerian can decrease muscle spasms, the herb is helpful in treating digestion problems
relating to nervousness and stress. Although valerian is often recommended as a treatment for nervous stomach conditions.
